Description and Main Activities
The organic chemistry is a key activity at the Pharmaceutical and Pharmacological Sciences Department. This training course is a key activity for the students and it provides the opportunity to put theoretical knowledge into practice. Through a series of guided experiments, students gain hands-on experience with fundamental techniques for the synthesis, purification, and characterization of organic compounds, while developing a critical and methodical approach to experimental work.
The laboratory covers core topics in organic chemistry, including substitution, addition, and elimination reactions, the protection and deprotection of functional groups, and the synthesis of molecules with pharmaceutical industrial interest. Emphasis is placed on laboratory safety, proper handling of reagents, and thorough documentation of experimental procedures.
Students also learn to use essential analytical techniques, such as Thin Layer Chromatography (TLC), High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC), and Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, which are crucial to monitor reactions and to identify synthesized products.
