Animal Care Facilities – Stabulari
At the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, there are 2 Animal Care Facilities (Facility Ed. A and Facility Ed. C) dedicated to the housing, care, and breeding of laboratory animals used for experimental purposes. The operation of the facilities is governed by current regulations (Legislative Decree 26/2014) and regulated by 2 Animal Welfare Officers (RBA) and the University Veterinary Service, which are part of the Animal Welfare Body (Organismo Preposto al Benessere Animale – OPBA) involved in overseeing all animal care facilities at the University of Padua.
The facilities provide researchers (both internal and external to the Department) with housing rooms for immunocompetent and immunocompromised strains, biological safety cabinets (class I and II), and equipped laboratories for surgery, behavioral tests, metabolic cages, and instrumentation for 2D in vivo imaging (bioluminescence and fluorescence) (IVIS Lumina Series III – Perkin Elmer/Revvity). Moreover, there is internal staff, competent and trained in the welfare of murine models and their use, according to Ministerial Decree (D.M. 05 August 2021), capable of providing care, assisting researchers in various activities, and providing technical-scientific support for the drafting of animal experimentation protocols and the application of the 3Rs.
Currently, pathogenetic and therapeutic studies are conducted in the animal facilities, promoting experimentation in various research areas, both basic for the understanding of pathophysiological mechanisms, and pre-clinical research in various medical fields for the development of new therapeutic strategies.
